Four schools of Tibetan Buddhism
The Buddhist schools in Tibet were divided into four different schools. They were Nyingma (early translation or oldest school), Kagyu (oral transmission), Sakya (pale earth or Grey earth) and Gelug (Virtuous one. Out of four school Nyingma is the oldest school of Tibetan buddhism. The teaching was founded by Guru Padma sambhawa in the 8th century. The school practices Dzongchen or great perfection which focus on the realization of innate nature of mind.
Kagyu is often known as oral transmission or lineage. This school practice ls meditation particularly Mahamudra(great seal) and the six Yogas of Naropa. The Kagyu school come to alive in the 11th century by Marpa and his disciple Milarepa.
Sakya school was founded in 11th century by Konchok Gyelpo. The teaching focuses on integration of Sutras and Tantra.
Gelug school was founded by Tshongkhapa in the 14th century also called as Yellow head school. They emphasize on monastic discipline, scholarship and the systematic study of Buddhist philosophy. The Gelugpa are known for their path to enlightenment. Dalai traditional came from this school.
